3-18-20 Message to Families

Dear Parents,

First, I want to thank you for your patience, trust, and support. I also want to acknowledge the anxiety, fear, frustration, and concern that you may be feeling. These are challenging times and I want to reassure you that I, along with our incredible staff, are diligently working to keep your child safe and continue the learning process.

Second, as I noted in my last parent communication, Minnesota Governor Walz closed all schools in the state from March 18-27. In addition to the Governor’s school closure, STMA closed March 16-27. Today was our first day of planning for distance learning with staff. I am incredibly proud of the large amount of work staff accomplished today. Staff created high quality distance learning plans, provided 300+ meals for students, and cared for over 200+ children----and that was JUST today! Our staff are truly impressive. Staff will continue to plan, provide meals, and offer childcare for emergency workers through March 27.

Executive Order 20-02 from Governor Walz states that school is not in session from March 18-27 so schools can plan for distance learning. The Governor has not officially closed schools for distance learning at this time. However, I highly anticipate that he will close school on March 30 for distance learning.  I will continue to keep you updated.

In the interim, staff are working tirelessly to prepare for an extended period of distance learning. Today I witnessed an abundance of innovation, creativity, and care devoted to creating high quality distance learning experiences for our children. Since today was the first day of planning with staff, I did not have information to communicate to you until today. Many of you received emails from your child’s principal with information about distance learning. If you haven’t received an email yet, please watch for one.

Further, we are providing meals (breakfast and lunch) for ALL STMA children under 18 years of old, beginning Wednesday, March 18. Meals are available for pickup at Middle School East and Fieldstone Elementary from 11:30-1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday for the foreseeable future. Students must be present to pick up their meals. If your child has a food allergy and you would like to participate in the meal program please call or email Director of Food Service Dolores Helgeson at 763-497-6537 prior to picking up to ensure the safety of your child. If there is a hardship and you are unable to pick up meals, call or email Director Helgeson. As I noted above, we provided over 300 meals today! KUDOS to our amazing staff for making this happen on the first day back.

In addition, STMA recognizes that closure of school may provide challenges for childcare of essential health and emergency personnel. As a result, we are providing childcare, free of charge, for children of essential health and emergency personnel. To see if you are eligible, please review this document. If you qualify, click here to register your child(ren). For additional information please call or email Coordinator Lisa Becker at 763-497-6550. As I noted above, we cared for over 200 children today! That allows countless individuals to go to work to help others during this challenging time. Thanks to our fabulous staff for caring for these children so their parents could perform their essential work.

The past couple of weeks have been very challenging, stressful, and at times scary. But, they’ve also been invigorating, inspiring, and reassuring. Amidst very challenging times, I’ve been amazed by the strength, unity, creativity, and dedication of STMA staff and our community. Our strong tradition of excellence continues to thrive. Thank you for your patience, grace, and support. It’s a pleasure serving your children, our staff, and community.

Respectfully,

Dr. Ann-Marie Foucault
STMA Superintendent
