  • Create labels to organize Gmail

    You can create labels that store your emails. Add as many labels as you want to an email. Only you can see the labels that are added to your messages.

    Note: Labels are different from folders. If you delete a message, it will be erased from every label that it’s attached to and your entire inbox. 

    There are a few different ways to create labels in Gmail. You can create them from the Gmail menu, from Settings, from your inbox, and when you are composing a new email.

     

    Creating Labels from the Gmail Menu

    1. Open your Gmail
    2. On the left menu under your Compose button, click on More. If you don't see More, scroll down to it.

    4. Name your label
    5. Click Create

    1. Open your Gmail
    2. In the top right click on the settings gear icon
    3. Select SettingsSettings gear
    4. Click the Labels tab
    5. Scroll to the Labels section and click Create new label
    6. Enter the label name and click CreateLabel Settings

    Note: You can also create "Nested Labels" which are like subfolders.

     

    Creating labels from an Email

    1. Open your Gmail
    2. Select an email you would like to label by clicking the box to the left of the email
    3. Click on Label iconLabel Icon
    4. Click on Create new or choose an existing label
    5. Enter the label name and click CreateLabel Name

    Optional: Click Nest label under and choose an existing label to place it under.

    The new label automatically applies to your email. You can apply muliple labels to your emails.

    Creating a label when sending an email

    Once you have started to compose a new email, you can label it before sending it.

    1. In the new mail message window, click on the three dots options icon
    2. Select Label
    3. Now you can create a new label or select an existing label or multiple labels.
