Homelessness and the McKinney-Vento Act

Homelessness can happen to anyone. The McKinney-Vento Act provides resources and supports for students experiencing homelessness. St. Michael-Albertville has a team of people who want to help you through this transition because we believe that every child deserves school stability. Homeless Definition

Homelessness is defined by the McKinney-Vento Act as "One who lacks a fixed, regular, adequate, night-time residence."

This can include living:

• In a shelter
• In a hotel/motel
• In a car or in a park
• Doubling up with friends or family or 
• "Couch surfing."

Student Bill of Rights

• Immediate enrollment in the school of origin or the school where they currently reside.
• Transportation to the school of origin during the school day.
• Access to free meals, Title I, and other educational supports as necessary.
