Student Teaching at STMA

STMA is proud to cooperate with many area colleges and universities in-classroom observation and student teaching programs. We believe that these preparatory experiences give future teachers important real-world insight and development into the field of education. With this belief as a foundation for our student teaching programs, the following procedure has been established so college students and cooperating STMA teachers can provide the best developmental experience possible.

On behalf of the entire district, we wish you a successful student teaching experience with us and invite you to consider applying for available positions within our district.

Become A Student Teacher

Initial requests for all student teaching placements from colleges/universities can be directed to Human Resources at (763) 497-6504 or stmahr@mystma.org. Student teachers are asked not to contact individual teachers or building administrators to obtain information on individual student teaching placements.

Deadlines

  • For fall placement, requests must be submitted by July 15
  • For spring placement, requests must be submitted by November 15

Agreement Requirements

A current and valid agreement must be in place between the STMA district and the requesting college/university before a student teacher can be placed. If there is not a current and valid agreement in place, HR will work with the college/university on a new agreement that must be approved by the School Board prior to any further action on student teaching placements.

Student Teacher Requirements

Once an agreement is in place and approved by the School Board, student teachers will need to authorize and pass a background check. Background checks will only be approved if processed through the STMA background check system. A student teacher who does not receive a satisfactory background check will be ineligible for a student teaching experience in the district.

Student teachers will also be required to complete an online orientation and review of district policies before their student teaching placement begins.

Post-Graduation

We invite all our student teachers to consider applying for available substitute teaching and other positions. We have a strong history of hiring teachers that have student taught and subbed with us in the past. Student teaching and substitute teaching allow the opportunity to see and experience teaching at multiple locations with multiple administrators.
