Substitute Staff

Substitute positions are available for those that are interested in working for the STMA schools on an on-call basis. STMA is currently hiring substitutes to fill absences for teachers, paraprofessionals, food service, maintenance, and transportation. Choose the substitute position you are interested in applying for in the online application system. An approved background check, I-9 verification, and payroll paperwork must be completed prior to working as a substitute for the STMA School District.

Teacher Substitutes

For the 2023-24 school year, the daily substitute teacher rate is $170.00/day.

For those interested in substitute teaching that have a four-year degree but not in education, you will need to apply for a short-call substitute teaching license through the Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board. Your PELSB application will include a processing fee, a district verification of hardship form, a completed fingerprint card, and official transcripts in a sealed envelope from the colleges/universities you attended. 

In your application, please include the following:

  • Cover letter
  • Resume
  • Teaching license or short-call substitute license
  • Copies of all college transcripts (unofficial)

Substitute teachers are paid a daily rate for their services in quarter-day increments. The daily rate of pay is listed above, with quarter increments of time matching quarter increments of the amounts listed.

Support Staff Substitutes
(Paraprofessionals, Food Service, Maintenance, Transportation)

For those interested in subbing for support staff absences, a high school diploma is required. In your application, please include the following:

Support staff substitutes are paid an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate of pay for each classification is below.


  • Health Paraprofessionals: $18.32/hour

  • Special Education, ELL, Response, Planning Room Paraprofessionals: $17.86/hour
  • Teacher, Media, ECFE, Kids Play, Bright Beginnings Paraprofessionals: $15.90/hour

Office Staff

  • Administrative Assistant: $20.53/hour

  • Office Paraprofessionals: $16.85/hour
  • Print Shop Operator: $17.86/hour

Food Service

  • Cook Helper: $15.90/hour
  • Second Cook: $17.86/hour
  • Kitchen Manager: $20.53/hour


  • Custodian/Groundskeeper: $16.20/hour
  • Night Lead Custodian: $19.12/hour

How Subbing Works

STMA uses an absence management system called SmartFind. Current staff post days they will be absent in the system and substitutes can view openings and request to fill the opening. Depending on the qualifications assigned, SmartFind may also contact subs in the mornings or evenings with openings by phone.
