Flex Learning

St. Michael-Albertville will notify families of school closures and the implementation of a Flex Learning Day via phone call, text and/or email. Additionally, the Talking Points app will be used to notify families of English Learner students.

Families, students, and staff will be notified of a Flex Learning Day at least two hours prior to the normal school day start time or as soon as possible.

Students will:

• Complete flexible learning activities and assignments.

• Return any required materials (ie choice boards) on the day following a Flex Learning Day.

In advance, students will:

• Receive choice boards and retain them for future use.

Access Choice Boards

Students will:

• Complete flexible learning activities and assignments.

• Follow Flex Learning Day Schedule.

• Communicate with teachers via email or other appropriate digital media.

• Complete attendance google form for the day.

  • Students unable to access the form will present a completed choice board as evidence of attendance.

In advance, students will:

• Receive choice boards and retain them for future use.

Access Choice Boards

Students will:

• Be able to access their courses in Google Classroom at 9:00 am. 

• Complete flexible learning activities and assignments.

• Communicate with teachers via email or other appropriate digital media.

• Meet attendance requirements per teacher instructions.

In advance, students will:

• Access their courses in Google Classroom.

Students in grades K - 6

• Attendance for students not reported absent by parents will be taken based on completion signed Choice Boards, or a note stating the Choice Board activities were completed.

• Choice Boards will be collected on the following school day.

• Students that do not return Choice Boards within three days of the flex learning day will be marked as absent.

Students in grades 7 - 12

• Attendance for students not reported absent by parents will be taken based on:

  • presence during a google meet for assigned virtual class

  • completion of assigned work for asynchronous lesson

• Students who have been reported as absent by their parent/guardian will follow the school's make-up policy to complete the work missed.

Teachers will monitor communication from parents/students/teachers through appropriate means ( school email, voicemail and Google Classroom/SeeSaw) from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm.  Teachers will respond via email or phone.

We are enthusiastic about this opportunity to keep learning going for all students even during unpredictable weather or other unpredictable events, and will be listening to family input to improve our Flex Learning Plan for subsequent years.

The implementation of a Flex learning day will be left up to the discretion of the Superintendent. If it is known there is a possibility of a Flex Learning day in advance, the superintendent may decide to have staff prepare students for a Flex Learning day.

Students in grades Kindergarten through grade six will utilize choice boards for flex learning days. A choice board is a graphic organizer that allows students to choose from a variety of options to complete class activities.

Two-hour delays and/or early releases will still occur when necessary, and we will follow the same process as we have in the past. A Flex Learning Day is not implemented in this situation.

A parent or guardian should notify the teacher or principal if the student has any barriers to participating in a Flex Learning Day.

Students will have up to three days to complete their assignments, so there will be time for parental assistance to complete the work.

Teachers and learning specialists will collaborate to accommodate or modify lessons as necessary to meet students' needs.

Students who participate in STMA Online will not participate in Flex Learning days and will have a regularly scheduled day.
