American Indian Parent Advisory Committee

The American Indian Parent Advisory Committee (AIPAC) is comprised of parents and former students in the STMA community.

The focus of AIPAC is to meet the educational needs of American Indian students enrolled in STMA schools.

The purpose of AIPAC is to:

  • Discuss the needs of American Indian students enrolled in the district;
  • Provide recommendations for programming/services/activities for American Indian students and their families;
  • Ensure the District’s educational programming is adequately meeting the needs of American Indian students; and
  • Inform the District Advisory Committee of the district’s strengths and areas of needed improvements for American Indian students and their families.
AIPAC Logo

The STMA AIPAC LOGO serves to give a sense of individual identity within a larger organization.

The East is in YELLOW which represents spring, new beginnings, and arrival into the world.

The South is RED, representing summer, adolescence, the heat of the season, and building identities.

The West is BLACK for autumn, adult years, making our own decisions, and developing our own values.

The North is WHITE for winter, purity, enlightenment,  the time we become elders, and a time to return to the spirit world.

MOTHER EARTH represents our connection to life.

FATHER SKY is the present world we’re living in and the world we’re moving toward.

The MEDICINE WHEEL refers to your physical and spiritual state.  The center of the wheel represents the balance we strive to achieve between our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual sides.

Tipi Information

A 26 foot Dakota-style tipi was erected at Middle School West in April of 2022.  The tipi was donated by the STMA American Indian Parent Advisory Committee (AIPAC), and it was crafted by Nomadic Tipi Makers. A celebration ceremony was held featuring the rich cultural history of the Dakota tribes. The ceremony was educational as well as festive. It featured the Spirit Boy Drum Group, singers, and grass, buckskin, jingle, and fancy dancers. The significance of the tipi, drum, songs, and various styles of dance were explained.

The tipi is currently set up at the Community Education building beside the AIPAC garden. The tipi will serve as a “living artifact”  for STMA and a place for STMA American Indian students and their families to gather for events.

The State of Minnesota requires all school districts with ten or more American Indian students to have an AIPAC. Districts with twenty or more students receive Indian Education Aid and the AIPAC oversees the use of these funds. STMA qualifies for and receives those funds. The STMA AIPAC chose to use a portion of the funds to provide the tipi as a “living artifact” classroom for all STMA students to learn about the heritage of the people who lived and continue to live in our geographic area.

The tipi was featured in the local newspaper on May 19, 2022. Click here to view the article.
