National Honor Society

Description of activity: A national organization recognizing students for academic achievement, character, service, and leadership. The NHS is also affiliated with the Minnesota Association of Honor Societies.

Advisor: Bob Zahler, Room 2276

Oversight: while the advisor oversees the regular operations of the organization, the high school principal, Mr. Bob Driver, is the official head of the NHS. A nine-member faculty council oversees and approves any major decisions of the organization and makes the final selection of new members.

Meetings: Full membership meetings are held in the mornings before school usually twice a month. Additional full membership and committee meetings are scheduled on the basis of need. Attendance at meetings is mandatory to maintain membership.

Eligibility requirements: At the end of the second trimester sophomores and juniors with a cumulative GPA of 3.67 are recommended by the STMA faculty and selected for membership by the faculty council. This is not an activity in which a student may simply apply for membership. It is an honor bestowed on the student. Students with documented legal infractions including chemical violations are not considered for membership. The selection process is rigorous. Once selected, members must adhere to national standards as well as STMA requirements. Please see the attached document for a complete description of the selection process.

Average number of members: Membership varies each year.

Student leadership: A four-member executive board is selected by the members.

Additional information: The NHS is a service-based organization. While membership is an honor bestowed on the student, each member is expected to be actively involved in numerous service activities throughout the school year. Examples of the activities include planning Homecoming and Winter Week events; collecting food for the Hanover Food Shelf, managing a toy drive, raising funds for the American Cancer Society, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital; and running an American Red Cross blood drive.

Process for Eligible Sophomores and Juniors
If you are a sophomore or junior who has received an invitation to apply for membership in the Knights Chapter of the NHS for the 2017 induction, please take the Student Information Survey. The survey must be completed in one sitting, so it is recommended that you prepare your responses in advance before completing the survey. You may, for example, view the form and type your response in a document. Then, copy and paste your responses into the Google form. There is no option to save your work to return to finish at a later time. Surveys must be submitted before midnight on Saturday, April 1, 2017.

PSEO and the NHS
If you are a student who has been invited to join the NHS but you are planning to go PSEO next year, please know that it is possible to do both, but it can pose conflicts. Being a PSEO student does not excuse an NHS member of his/her obligations. You would still have to make all of the twice-monthly meetings and any committee meetings and other evening/weekend events. In the past some PSEO students have managed to maintain their membership, but they have had to work their college classes around the NHS schedule. Those who could not make it to meetings or events were dismissed from the NHS.
