Budget

School finances are complex. Funding from the state is based on pupil units. General Education Revenue per pupil unit includes referendum dollars, alternative compensation, and special education revenue. In state funding, STMA ranks 326 out of 339 districts. Samples of the amount of revenue per pupil unit by district are listed below.

District dollars per pupil unit
Total Revenue State Rank   Total Revenue State Rank
Minneapolis 12.048 2 Maple Lake 7.255 236
Hopkins 9.502 22 Buffalo 7.031 268
Osseo 9.096 34 Delano 6.897 286
Wayzata 8.158 98 Rockford 6.508 324
Monticello 7.889 129 STMA 6.471 326
Elk River 7.542 191 Big Lake 6.319 331
Annandale 7.260 235 Medford 5.972 338

There is a large discrepancy in the amount of dollars districts receive for operating. These dollar amounts are multiplied by the ‘per pupil units’ so they show thousands of dollars difference in funding among districts.

The graph shows projected expenditures for the General Fund, which has a budget of over $38,000,000.
