Alternate School Attendance

All STMA students, including open enrolled students, are automatically assigned to the school that serves their home address. The Alternate School Attendance (School Board Policy 552) allows for families to apply for a transfer to an assigned alternate school provided qualifying conditions are met and the parent/guardian provides or arranges transportation.

If you would like your child(ren) to attend a school other than their assigned neighborhood school, you must apply for Alternate School Attendance. If your request is due to:

  • Parent/guardian is deployed for a military assignment and requests to have a child continue to attend the current neighborhood school.
  • Parent/guardian moves from the assigned boundary attendance area where the child is attending school and requests to have a child continue to attend the current neighborhood school.
  • Sibling of a student currently assigned to alternate attendance school for education programming.

Please complete the 2017-2018 Alternate School Attendance Form and contact your building administrative assistant or Heather Sroka (763-497-3180 Option 7). One application per student per school will be accepted.

How will Transfer Decisions Be Made?

If the number of Alternate School Attendance applications are fewer than the openings available, all students requesting admission will be approved.

When the number of available spaces at the requested school is less than the number of requests, applicants will be chose by random selection with preference assigned in the following order.

  1. Siblings of a student whose parents/guardians are residents of the district.
  2. Siblings of a student whose parents/guardians are non-residents of the district.
  3. Students of resident parents/guardians who are employees of the district.
  4. Student of non-resident parents/guardians who are employees of the district.
  5. Students of resident parents/guardians whose childcare is located in another attendance area.
  6. Student of non-resident parents/guardians whose child care is located in another attendance area.

Applicants who request a school with no space available or who have less space available than requests, will be placed on a waiting list for the requested school. Waiting list applicants will be reviewed no later than August 10 and approved to enroll if space becomes available at the requested school. Parents/guardians must confirm commitment and provide the completed child care verification form when applicable by August 15, or the transfer will be revoked.
